Raising on a shield in Byzantine iconography
By Christopher Walter
Revue des études byzantines, Vol. 33 (1975)
Abstract: The author gives a repertory of the twenty-one examples known to him of representations of raising on a shield. By confronting them with written accounts of the ceremony, he attempts to establish the date at which this theme came into current use. He then studies its combination with those of coronation and unction, with a view to determining more accurately than hitherto how the theme passed from the illustration of one literary genre to that of another, and what was its function in iconographical programmes.
